Sodium Hydroxide
Sodium hydroxide solution is the term for alkaline solutions of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) in water. Sodium hydroxide solution is manufactured through the electrolysis of sodium chloride, accounting for around 65% of global production. Chlorine is also produced during this process. Sodium hydroxide solution is used in a wide range of industrial applications. Sodium hydroxide solution is often used as a cleaning or flushing agent (e.g. as a paint stripper, for flushing bottles in drink bottling plants, for cleaning oil and grease). Further examples of use are in the manufacture of soaps, mercerisation (refinement of cotton), pulp production and as the food additive E 524.
