The Paris Agreement lays out where we want to be, but not how we need to get there. According the German Federal Government’s Climate Action Plan, emissions need to be measurably reduced by 2030 – by at least 55%. By 2050, emissions should be reduced by 80% to 95% – the 1990 emission values serving as the benchmark here.

Germany achieved its climate targets in 2020, with emissions dropping by 40.8% (again, measured against the 1990 benchmark values) – albeit with some disappointment that a third of this achievement, particularly in the transport and energy segments, was attributable to the pandemic.

Germany’s carbon emissions account for around just 2.5% of the world’s emissions, but if we combine all 27 EU member states, the EU’s emissions are ranked third globally behind China and the U.S. This shows that the environment is a global topic – and also that all action taken in service of cutting emissions is a step towards achieving a greater and more important objective.
